Islands are located in the Indian Ocean in the north of the Mozambique Strait between Madagascar and the African continent. Represents the archipelago of volcanic origin, whose name from Arab is translated as Luna Islands. According to archaeological data, these land plots were settled in the V century of our era.

For the first time, they were described by the Dutch traveler Houtman at the end of the XVI century, but for a long time after that, European countries left these distant land without attention.

In the second half of the XIX century, the control over these territories was established by France and 4 main islands with a total area of 2,236 km2, components of the archipelago, are still widely known for their French names:

  • Grand Comor (Nhazidge)
  • Anjouan (Njuani),
  • Moheli (Malva)
  • Mayotte (Maore)

Grand Comor is about 200 km from Mayotte, 40 km from Mokhli and 80 km from Anjouan. Due to the lack of good port facilities, the transport connection and communication between the islands is sufficiently difficult. The islands arose as a result of intensive volcanic activity due to the tectonic movements that began about 8 million years ago.

In a geological scale of time, this is not such a revered age (as a comparison, larger and ancient Madagascar belonged to continental land from 70 to 120 million years ago).

Mayotte is the oldest of the 4-islands and formed 7.7 million years ago.

The island area is 375 km2, and the highest points are at a height of 500 to 600 m above sea level. Well developed coral reefs surround the island and form a lagoon.

Grand Comor island is considered the youngest - it is formed only 10,000 years ago and there is an active volcano, Mount Kartal, whose peak reaches 2361 m and has the largest volcanic crater in the world.

The nature of the islands is unique and is represented by a wide variety of flora and fauna. On this territory you can see 37 species of animals, which it is impossible to meet more in any other corner of the globe, and the ocean's water makes the ancient forms of life.

Administrative device, flag, capital

Union of Comoros is an independent state with a republican form of government and its president. For a long time, the island was a colony and consisted under the control of France.

On July 6, 1975, the island state received sovereignty, but during the referendum of 1974, three islands spoke for independence, and 60% of Mayotte residents did not express their desire to become a member of the new Federation and decided to remain under the authority of the French administration.

Despite the fact that the island has the status of the overseas territory of France, it is considered an integral part of the Union and this is reflected in the official symbols of the state, including the coin editions.

The modern version of the National Flag was adopted in 2001 after a series of changes. From 1978 to 2001 there were 3 options, although they all consisted of a green leaf, a white crescent and four white five-pointed stars in different variations.

Today's version is enriched with four horizontal stripes in yellow, white, red and blue tones. The traditional symbols of Islam - crescent and stars are now located in a green wedge on the left side of the flag.

Each strip, as well as 4 stars represent Islands:

  • Mohels
  • Mayotte
  • Anjouan
  • Grand Comor

The snow-white walls of the mosque contrast with the blue sea, in an amazing way combined with calm azure waters of the harbor. The arches of their design create a rhythmic effect, and the bright green dome is directed to the sky.

The mosque was built in the fifteenth century under the influence of Arabic architecture and serves as a sacred place for Muslims, occupying a special position in the hierarchy of vintage mosques. It is used for daily prayers, but the visitors of the mosque can enter to admire it internal architecture, which remarkably displays a rich Islamic story ascending to ancient times.
